Customer Review: Good saw, usual Jet design flaws

I've had this saw about 6 months in my home shop. It was easy to set up, not too heavy if you have some help and the instructions were clear. It's built pretty well, runs relatively quiet and makes smooth cuts, using its hydraulic downfeed. I particularly like the rotating head. It allows easy and accurate miter cuts to about 45 degrees. There are a few things that really need to be fixed in the design department, though.
Pros: Accurate 90 degree and other angle cuts are easy and accurate. Smooth cuts, effective catch pan and it's easy to wheel into a corner when you're done. It's also more stable than the entry-level Jet and Delta saws, being much less likely to want to tip over. Overall it's a significant improvement over the entry level gravity-drop saws, IMO.
Cons: The shut-off switch is poorly designed. It's near the pivot end of the saw and proper adjustment has proven impossible for me, so far. You have to lift the saw quite high to get at the switch to turn it on, which makes visual alignment of cuts more difficult and waiting for the hydraulics to drop the saw then becomes tedious. Delta's cheaper 6" saw (the one I sold to get this one) has the shutoff at the opposite end, so it's very easy to set and use. A minor gripe is that the workpiece holding jaws are controlled by a small handwheel under the saw when it's in the down position. It would be nicer if the wheel were a bit bigger and perhaps positioned past the end of the saw.
Overall, I'm pretty happy with the saw and if I ever get the shutoff switch to work I'll be fully satisfied, minor stuff notwithstanding. My bet is that Jet is already aware of the saw's flaws and will eventually fix it.
