Customer Review: Almost perfect - but missing on a couple small details

First of all, this is a terrific saw. Good variable speed control, fast tool-free blade changes, solid construction, tremendous power, and reasonably smooth operation. I consider these features to be absolute requirements for anyone looking to buy a $100-$150 reciprocating saw. In these categories, I think this Porter-Cable is one of the best saws on the market. Where they missed is in the small details. The thin metal and wood blades that come with the tool are pathetic. After bending all the blades that were included, I went out and bought two Blu-Mol Aggressor Xtreme 6" Bi-metal with cobalt blades...a wrecking blade for wood, the other a "rescue/demolition" blade for metal. What a difference! This is the ultimate blade/saw combination. I'm also not a fan of the way the cord is stored in the case. Getting the case shut without pinching the power cord is a problem every time I put it away. Would have been nice if they would have made room to wrap the cord around the tool itself. But these minor annoyances are exactly that...minor. The quick change mechanism is a breeze and it's a great tool overall.

If you're looking for a low-cost, effective, reliable reciprocating saw without a lot of extra bells and whistles, Porter-Cable's Tiger saw might be your best bet. It's among the lowest-priced professional-grade saws on the market, but lacks none of the power and performance of its competitors. The Tiger saw features trigger-controlled variable speeds (0 to 2,600 spm), a 10 amp motor, and a 1-1/8-inch stroke length. The saw also features a tool-free quick-change chuck. It doesn't have orbital action or the vibration-dampening counterbalance found on some of the more expensive saws, but unless you're a full-time demolition and destruction specialist, this is all the saw you're likely to need. The Tiger saw is plenty tough enough to make just about any cut, and it comes with Porter-Cable's reputation for reliability. --Brian TrinenReciprocating Saws
